How to Create a Simple Invoice Online
A beginner-friendly checklist for creating a clear invoice with sender details, client details, line items, taxes, and totals.
What a basic invoice needs
An invoice should make it easy for a client to understand who is billing them, what work was completed, when payment is due, and how much they owe.
You do not need complex accounting software for a simple freelance invoice. A clean online invoice draft is often enough for small projects, especially before you move the data into your accounting records.
- Your name or company name.
- Client name and contact details.
- Invoice date and optional invoice number.
- Line items, quantity, rate, taxes, and total.
- Payment instructions and due date.
Keep descriptions specific
Instead of writing a vague line item like services, describe the actual work. For example, monthly website maintenance, product photography editing, or landing page copywriting is clearer for both sides.
Review before sending
Check the math, names, dates, tax percentage, and payment method. A small mistake can delay payment because the client has to ask for a corrected invoice.
